Published in 2013, the volume treats a very rare theme in Romanian literature, the deportations of Roma in Transnistria in the period when Marshal Antonescu, head of the legionary movement, was the leader of Romania.
The book presents the story of a young roma that wants to overcome his condition, denying his own roots, and which dream was to get a military career. He has as an idol the leader of Romanian Legionary, which is Antonescu.
In order to get this career, the young Georgian has to hide his past and pretend to be a Romanian, leading him to an odd behavior. The young man seems like he doesn’t remember about the roma colony where he lived in poverty and misery.
The story takes a strange turn when the mother and the sister of the young soldier are deported to Transnistria, due to an order of the Marshal Antonescu, so the main character is forced to take action. This moment is a key point of the story, the readers will see that the life of Georgian, from this point, will totally change.
“Black and red” was presented in Barcelona on 14th December in Library Camp de L’arpa – Caterina Albert, which was the start of the Spanish tour for the author.
The author made the decision to publish the book in Spanish language and the Romanian Cultural Institute organized an event on the 19th of December in Madrid. At the event were present also two historian experts, Henar Corbi and Juan de Dios Ramirez to give a lecture regarding the Holocaust of Roma in Europe.
This book can be the starting point for young roma all over Romania, and why not in Spain, to recognize their ethnicity and be proud of their roots.
In a world filled with war and terror, Georgian found the power to overcome his problems and managed to find his real place in the society by recognizing his ethnicity and helping his family against the regime.
