Nicolae
Gheorghe (1946 – 2013) – International Roma Rights Activist
If
we try to find a contemporary human rights superhero, Nicolae Gheorghe will be
the perfect candidate. Fighting for Roma rights under the Ceausescu’s communist
regim it was an enourmous act of courage which brought him into the attention
of European public opinion.
Born
in 1946 in a poor Roma family, came in Bucharest along with his family in one
of the poorest areas of the city. Despite all of this, he finished as head of
promotion for the Sociology University in Bucharest.
Since
1990, after the collapse of communism in Romania, he started a diplomatic
offensive for Roma recognition at national level but also at European level
like a minority.
Nicoale
Gheorghe was not so well known in Romania, but his prodigious career abroad
gave Roma a legacy that will last in the mentality of Roma from all over
Europe.
As
a spiritual leader, Nicolae Gheorghe was an inspiration to thousands of Roma
youngsters and that lead to a recognition of Roma intellectual category all
over Europe.
He
was also the founder of Roma International movement being considered as “Moses
of Roma”, he dedicated all of his life for changing mentalities and views all
over the world regarding Roma topic.
His
great work was acknowledged all over Europe and he received human rights award
of the French State (1992), European Union’s human right award in 1997 followed
by a diplomatic career to the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the
OSCE.
In
his last years, Nicolae Gheorghe managed to create with his texts what we now
call “Testament of Freedom and Dignity Roma”, which presents a new way of
acting and thinking regarding Roma solving issues.
Changing
views regarding the approach of Roma issue, he thought that the vision is
moving from internationalism to localism, going from fighting poverty to combat
racism but also trying to get the political equality policies of fairness in
justice. He also speaks about changing apathy to solidarity and tries to
restructure leadership of Roma.
Even though Nicolae Gheorghe left us in 2013(8
august), we should keep his image alive and we should learn from his work and
struggle regarding Roma community all over Europe. It should not be just about
Roma topic, it is about a man that really believed in his power to change
things that are not going well and managed to do that with great work and endless
effort.
