Last week I had the honor to attend once again the
Phiren Amenca Seminar - this time in beautiful Turin, Italy. Organized by Phiren
Amenca, a network of Roma and non-Roma volunteers and voluntary service
organizations creating opportunities for non-formal education, dialogue and
engagement, in order to challenge stereotypes and racism. Since
I had already participated in the previous fall, I already had an idea of what
to expect. The aim of the seminar was to bring together youth workers, volunteers,
multipliers and local stakeholders in order to raise a debate about the
importance of Roma (youth) representation in policy processes. Over the week we mainly focused on concepts and mechanisms of
antigypsyism. With in the week we also had some lectures about the human rights
situation of young Roma, especially in Italy. We also had to work together
during the week in smaller groups during workshops. For example, we got
assignments to organize a festival for young Roma with a budget of 10,000 €. What
I appreciated mostly, was that we also learned to develop advocacy tools,
trained how to advocate for equal human rights and social justice and how to
advocate against the raise of antigysyism and multiple discrimination.
